Yes, the way Robert Jordan handled his fans probably cost him many of them. I do know many authors like Mercedes Lackey publish anthologies every year of their own personal favorite fanfics. The authors actually get a more than fair rate and are published in print by her national company. I believe at one time HK Rowling considered this, but never got back to it.
