(It helps -- it really does...)
Alright, people, here's the treatise that the lovely Litharriel was mentioning, which also means that this is a fresh chance to Pimp My LJ Community with......
The "Other" Guide to Cutting the Crap
I know, I know, this is not like me atall....but I am rather excited about having this written and posted, because it is something that I do think will be very useful to people dealing with the world of otherkin online groups and forums, and the material and personal assertions presented within them. Seeing as I have many friends who are in the "other" category and not familiar with/entrenched in the whole online group culture, this is a bit of a handbook of how to read signs and between the lines and figure out what sort of places offer you the best chance of community and mutual investigation/growth for whatever (and more importantly, whoever) you happen to be.
Note: I do not name any names in this thing. Just in case you were....concerned about that for any reason. But it does give some pretty distinct examples of situations and types that I'm personally acquainted with, as well as many others drawn from the overflowing stock-box of otherkin/alternative stereotypes.....hey, you know they're out there, so might as well address them instead of pretending they came outta nowhere and no one helped 'em along.
This is a handbook for people who already have some experience in using their intelligence (and the desire to continue doing so freely), though it's written fairly accessibly for everyone, I think....but ya know, you'll never see for yourself what it's like unless you check it out. Might as well take a plunge into the depths of mega-weirdness plus mega-logic....:-|
[And don't take it too seriously...if you can't understand a little tongue-in-cheek humour here and there, you just might get pissed off at me. Read deeper, my friend...read deeper...this really is not just the same-old same-old in the field.]
